The Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership recently recognized Henrico County as one of the 100 recipients of the 2023 Top Virginia Employers for Interns Awards.

The annual award, announced in a July 27 press release from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, honors Virginia employers who provide “high-quality” internships to students. The partnership recognized employers’ efforts to provide interns with structured mentorship programs, housing allowances, paid time off, security clearances, training for industry certifications and exposure to senior leaders.

“All the award winners demonstrate a commitment to meaningful internships,” SCHEV director Peter Blake said. “High-quality internships enhance a student’s educational experience and strengthen our workforce.”

Henrico County’s Internship Program provides interns with college credit or pay and opportunities to network with professionals across the county. High school students or college students enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program are eligible to apply.

Award recipients also included the City of Roanoke, the City of Virginia Beach, Dominion Energy, Norfolk State University, the University of Mary Washington, Virginia Tech and others.

The award celebrates Virginia Intern Day, created by Governor Glenn Youngkin as a day to recognize students, employers, colleges and universities for their participation in work-based learning opportunities. Youngkin signed a proclamation designating July 27, 2023 as Virginia Intern Day, aligning it with National Intern Day.

V-TOP also created a video to celebrate the award winners.

“The 100 recipients represent a distinguished group of employers that help cultivate talent here in Virginia for the betterment of its students, regions and the commonwealth as a whole,” said Barry DuVal, president and CEO of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

Kirk Cox, the president of the Virginia Business Higher Education Council, expressed appreciation for the awarded employers.

“To the 2023 Top Employers for Interns, not only are you the backbone of Virginia’s economy, but you have the pulse of the changing skills necessary for career success,” Cox said.

V-TOP, a partnership formed in 2020 between SCHEV and the Virginia Chamber Foundation, seeks to expand paid and credit-bearing internships, along with other work-based learning opportunities, in collaboration with Virginia employers. V-TOP is also administered by the Virginia Business Higher Education Council and funded by the General Assembly’s Commonwealth Innovative Internship Fund and Program.
