The event will feature the presentation of two new reports examining the intersection of zoning regulations, housing affordability, and educational outcomes within the region. The reports are the result of a collaboration between the University of Richmond, HousingForward Virginia, Partnership for Housing Affordability, Housing Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia, The Commonwealth Institute, VCU School of Education, VCU Research Institute for Social Equity, and the RVA Eviction Lab.

One of the reports, an update to the 2017 study "Confronting School and Housing Segregation in the Richmond Region: Can We Learn and Live Together?", analyzes the ongoing impact of housing segregation and school segregation in the area. The original study has been widely referenced by educators, policymakers, and researchers.

The event also will spotlight the Virginia Zoning Atlas, a new data set that provides insights into how zoning regulations influence the types of housing permitted within localities across the Richmond region, Northern Virginia, and Hampton Roads.

“Housing and educational segregation are closely connected with race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, and these topics are of importance to everyone,” said Tom Shields, an education and leadership studies professor at the University of Richmond and event co-organizer.
