The University of Richmond has been recognized for its commitment to environmental sustainability by The Princeton Review, earning a spot among the top 50 schools nationally in the 2025 edition of its annual Guide to Green Colleges.

It's the third consecutive year that UR has achieved a top-50 ranking, and it has been featured in the guide for more than a decade. The Princeton Review bases its selections upon data submitted by colleges and surveys administered to students about their experiences with sustainability on campus.

Schools are evaluated on their use of renewable energy, the availability of sustainability-related academic programs, and whether students perceive their campus environment as healthy and eco-conscious.

“UR has built a dedicated culture of sustainability on campus thanks to our students, faculty, staff, and community partners,” said UR Director of Sustainability Rob Andrejewski. He emphasized the community's active engagement in sustainability efforts, citing examples like volunteering at waste diversion initiatives during football games, contributing to the campus energy strategy and pursuing sustainability-focused academic minors.

UR's Office for Sustainability spearheads a range of environmental initiatives throughout the year, encompassing volunteer programs, film screenings, and other initiatives. UR won first place in Virginia in the 2023 national "Campus Race to Zero Waste" competition, diverting more than 270 tons of organic waste from landfills since November 2020 as part of its "Rethink Waste" program.

The office currently is working to establish the Eco-Corridor Orchard and Food Forest, an edible plant demonstration site featuring fruit trees, shrubs, herbs, and perennial pollinators.
