University of Richmond ranks 15th nationally in ‘College Brand Index’

Table of Contents

The University of Richmond ranks 15th among 1,576 colleges and universities in the nation in the new College Brand Index, a measure of those schools’ “brand perception” compiled by CollegeVine, a website that helps students evaluate potential schools.

UR is the highest-rated Virginia college or university shown in the report; The College of William and Mary is next, at No. 66.

The CBI is a comprehensive measure of institutional brand perception and engagements, according to CollegeVine, which built the index by compiling and sorting data from the more than 2.2 million student users in its recruiting network. The index quantifies a college’s brand performance on a scale of 0 to 100 in “various dimensions of engagement and perception among its target audience,” according to the organization’s methodology overview.

The index uses a combination of data and metrics from four types of actions on the CollegeVine website (adjusted reach, engagement, conversion, and current student satisfaction levels) and seven categories of student and parent ratings (including overall satisfaction, peer interaction, career and future goal alignment and campus safety), as well as narrative reviews from parents and students.

“The Brand Index is enriched with qualitative insights that capture the nuanced perceptions and experiences of both students and their parents,” CollegeVine officials wrote in their methodology explanation. “These metrics provide depth to the quantitative data, offering a more holistic view of an institution's brand. Sourced from a substantial dataset of 169,344 ratings shared by currently enrolled students and their parents, these qualitative metrics are critical for understanding the multifaceted nature of college brands.”

The 10 highest-rated schools in the index (in order) are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University, the California Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Yale University, followed by Dartmouth College, Duke University, Harvard University, Princeton University and Rice University.
