A junior at J. R. Tucker High School won fourth place in theNational History Day contest, an annual project-based contest hosted by the nonprofit National History Day.

Carly Phung competed against more than 3,000 students across the U.S. and placed in her category for her exhibit, “Say Cheese!: How Lewis Hine Used Cameras to Shine a Light Upon Life’s Dark Corners.”

Her project examined the impact of  the American photographer Lewis Hine, whose photographs were instrumental in changing child labor laws in the early 1900s.

Forty-nine middle and high school students from every region of Virginia competed against students from across the country, according to the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. Winners were announced Saturday in a virtual award ceremony.
