Traffic shifts to take place March 21-23 on I-64 at Airport Drive

Table of Contents

Beginning Sunday, March 21, the Virginia Department of Transportation will conduct a series of traffic switches on Interstate 64 over Airport Drive (Route 156) as part of the ongoing I-64/Airport Drive bridge replacement and interchange improvements project in Henrico County. The shifts have been delayed several times by inclement weather.

Drivers should expect the following and use caution when in work zones on I-64 from 6 p.m.-5 a.m. each night:
• Sunday night (March 21) – Eastbound I-64 traffic will be switched onto the newly constructed eastbound bridge;
• Monday night (March 22) – Traffic in both directions will operate as normal while crews work on the median bridge;
• Tuesday night (March 23) – Westbound I-64 traffic will be switched onto the median bridge while crews begin demolition on the existing westbound bridge.

Weather permitting, all traffic shifts will be complete by 5 a.m. Wednesday, March 24. Traffic on Airport Drive and ramps to and from Airport Drive will not be impacted.

The primary purpose of the $35 million project is to replace the I-64 eastbound and westbound bridges over Airport Drive, increase vertical clearance on Airport Drive and perform all necessary approach work to accommodate this vertical increase. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be complete in late 2022.
