Traffic pattern on Airport drive switching again Sept. 13

Table of Contents

The traffic pattern on Airport Drive at I-64 will switch again Monday, Sept. 13, as part of an ongoing project there.

The change will take effect at 8 p.m. that day and will involve:

• the shift of I-64 westbound traffic to the new westbound bridge;

• the opening of the Airport Drive-northbound-to-I-64-westbound on-ramp loop;

• the deactivation of the temporary left-turn signal.

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction. The purpose of the switch is to allow room for crews to construct the permanent median.

Weather permitting, the traffic shift will be complete by 6 a.m. Sept. 14.

The primary purpose of the $35 million project is to replace the I-64 eastbound and westbound bridges over Airport Drive, increase vertical clearance on Airport Drive and perform all necessary approach work to accommodate this vertical increase. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be complete in late 2022.
