Tractor-trailer crash closes I-295 southbound lanes at Varina-Enon bridge

A tractor-trailer carrying paper products caught fire on the Varina-Enon Bridge in Eastern Henrico County Monday morning, snarling traffic and closing southbound travel lanes on I-295 at mile marker 18.7.

The crash was reported at about 8:15 a.m., according to Virginia State Police. The driver was not injured, but charges are pending the result of an investigation.

According to police, the truck struck the bridge on the right hand side of the road before catching fire.

Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes, including using Route 5 east to Route 156 south to the Benjamin Harrison Bridge to Route 10 west and back onto I-295 south. Travelers can call 511 or click here for real-time traffic updates.
