A week after announcing the most popular baby names in the nation in 2021, the U.S. Social Security Administration has announced the top names for each state.

Among newborn boys in Virginia, the name Liam – also the most popular boys’ name in the nation for five years running – topped the list.

The top name among girls born in Virginia last year was Charlotte, a name that ranked third nationally; Olivia was the most popular name nationally, for the third straight year.

The top five names for newborn boys in Virginia in 2021 were:

  1. Liam (also first nationally);
  2. Noah (also second nationally);
  3. James (fifth nationally);
  4. William (sixth nationally);
  5. Oliver (third nationally).

The only change in the top five boys’ names in Virginia from 2020 to 2021 was “James” and “William” switching positions.

The top five names for newborn girls in Virginia in 2021 were:

  1. Charlotte (third nationally);
  2. Olivia (first nationally);
  3. Emma (second nationally);
  4. Ava (fifth nationally);
  5. Sophia (sixth nationally).

As with the top boys’ names, the top girls’ names in the state were unchanged from 2020 to 2021 except for “Emma” and “Ava” swapping positions.
