The contents of the house best known as the “Cactus House” in Glen Allen are now up for auction until Nov. 9.

Portions of the immense collection of Southwest-themed items and keepsakes from Saguaro Hill, an eye-catching house on Staples Mill Road in Glen Allen are on auction by Grindstaff’s Auction Marketing Group.

“This house has been a Richmond icon since the late ‘70s,” Anne Grindstaff, owner of Grindstaff Auction Marketing Group, the auctioneers hosting the auction on their website. “That’s what makes it special, and the type of merchandise they have there.”

Some of the prized items available are Fredric Remington Bronze statues from throughout the home and the covered wagon sitting at the front of the property, Grindstaff said.

“It’s a lifetime collection that the Pembertons have accumulated,” Grindstaff said. “It’s a mixture of things that people might try to find just to remember the cactus house, that’s where we get a lot of interest, people want a piece of history.”

Scattered around the house are wall decor, wooden statues, a working jukebox, vintage leather chairs, cowboy hats, cowboy boots, glassware, turquoise jewelry, Native American memorabilia, lamps and memorabilia reminiscent of the Southwest all available for auction on the Grindstaff Auction Marketing Group’s website.

Portions of the outdoor decor are also available, including boulders and rocks adorning the six acres on which the house sits.

The house’s current owners, J.T. “Buzz” and Chloe Pemberton started construction on the house in 1977 and were living in the house from 1979 on. The house was inspired by Buzz Pemberton’s time stationed in 29 Palms Marine Corps in California, according to an article in Richmond Magazine.

“They have a love for the Southwest and that type of decor and scenery was just duplicated here in Richmond and has been here ever since,” Grindstaff said. “You’re not going to see anything like this built.”

Online bidding will close at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov., 9. Pickup time for items will be Saturday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 10816 Staples Mill Road in Glen Allen
