On September 18 at 8 a.m., Team Gabriel will gather at Deep Run Park for the Shine a Light NF Walk, the signature fundraising event of the Children’s Tumor Foundation. Team Gabriel joins the NF community from across Virginia to bring neurofibromatosis out of the shadows and raise funds for research.

Friends and family of Gabriel, a local boy who was diagnosed with NF1 at the age of 4 months, make up the team who will walk and fundraise in his honor. In addition to the activities and walk at the park, located at 9900 Ridgefield Parkway, celebrations will also take place virtually.

Gabriel started to develop fibromas at an early age; the main one is in his right hand and restricts Gabriel from such simple activities as holding a pencil. In March 2020, Gabriel started Koselugo (selumetinib), the first FDA-approved treatment for inoperable plexiform neurofibromas. Less than a year after Gabriel began the medication, an MRI showed the fibroma in his right hand had decreased in size more than 20 percent.

Registration for the walk is required and available at www.shinealightwalk.org/virginia2021. Check-in will begin Sept. 18 at 8 a.m., and the walk begins at 10 a.m.

Shine a Light NF Walks, supported by AstraZeneca, are open to the public; individuals, friends, families, teams, and corporate groups are encouraged to participate.
