Our Lady of Hope Health Center is asking local residents for help in creating summer survival kits for local seniors in need through Commonwealth Catholic Charities.

“It will be a wonderful summer surprise and is sure to bring smiles and uplift spirits,” said Diane Hargraves, the independence for seniors case worker at CCC.

The drive will run through June 14, said Connie Salinas, senior director of sales and marketing at Our Lady of Hope Health Center.

Salinas said the CCC supported around 186 senior families.

Our Lady of Hope conducts charitable drives once a quarter, Salinas said. Last fall, the organization collected more than 713 pairs of socks in a Socks-for-Seniors drive.

New items requested for the summer drive include:
• sunglasses;
• insulated cups;
• sunscreen and lotion;
• lip balm;
• wordsearch or puzzle books;
• gift cards, such as to Target, Walmart, etc.;
• Crystal Light and other sugar-free drink mixes;
• summer-themed hand towels and napkins.

Salinas emphasized the importance of drink mixes to help keep recipients hydrated.

Older people are at a significantly increased risk of heat-related illnesses, known collectively as hyperthermia, during the summer months, according to the National Institutes for Health.

Items can be dropped off at Our Lady of Hope Health Center, located at 13700 N. Gayton Road in Henrico.
