Students would learn 5 days a week in hybrid plans, HCPS officials clarify

All three of the proposed hybrid learning plans for Henrico County Public Schools students who choose to return to in-person learning this fall will include five days of instruction, a Henrico Schools spokesman clarified to the Citizen today.

During the Henrico School Board’s virtual work session Thursday, Henrico Schools Chief of Staff Beth Teigen outlined the three plans and said that each one would involve four days of learning for all students who chose to attend school in person, while Mondays would be reserved for a half-day work period for teachers and a half-day for additional support for students who needed it.

Today, Henrico Schools spokesman Andy Jenks relayed to the Citizen clarification from Teigen indicating that all students in each of the three plans actually would be learning on Mondays, too, whether in school or virtually.

Teigen described the three plans – each of which would divide students from each school into two groups – thusly Thursday:

• one would involve a group attending school in person Tuesdays and Thursdays, then working virtually from home Wednesdays and Fridays, while the other group did the opposite;
• another would involve one group attending school in the morning Tuesday through Friday, then learning virtually each afternoon, while the other group did the opposite;
• the third would involve one group attending school in person Tuesday through Friday one week, then learning virtually the following Tuesday through Friday, while the other group did the opposite.

It’s unclear whether Teigen on Thursday simply failed to include additional information about virtual learning plans for all students on Mondays or if the school system updated those plans in the four days since.

In addition to the three hybrid plans, families will have the option to keep their students home, learning virtually five days a week. Students who select that option will be assigned to specific teachers who will be teaching virtual classes only, Teigen said.

The Henrico School Board and Board of Supervisors will hold a joint work session tomorrow at 5 p.m. in the Glen Allen High School commons. The meeting is open to the public, though no comments will be accepted. It also will be live-streamed through Webex here.
