Students to broadcast live stream of Varina-Henrico football game

When the Henrico High School Warriors visit Blue Devil Stadium Friday night to take on Varina High School in football, there will be a third team of talented students scrambling hard on each play.

A group of students from the Center for Communications and Media Relations at Varina High will present a live stream of the game on henricoschools.us, with some limited assistance from others. The students' live coverage will feature multiple cameras, slow motion replays, color commentary, sideline reports, graphics and more.

While students in the Varina High School specialty center take classes relevant to TV work, this week they received some extra training. Students who will work the game spent time with members of Henrico Schools’ Department of Communications and Public Relations, getting training in the particulars of handling a live sports presentation.

“The Center for Communications and Media Relations’ students continue to build their resumes by taking advantage of exciting opportunities such as this,” said Heidi Craft, director of the center. “Many of our students desire a career in sports broadcasting. This livestream is a great way to give them firsthand experience on the sidelines and in the booth. Many of them participated in the livestream basketball game last year and jumped at the chance to cover such a high-profile, high-stakes football game that will honor their friends on senior night.”

The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The game presentation will be replayed on HCPS-TV (Comcast channel 99 and Verizon FIOS channel 38) four times:

• Oct. 24, 8 p.m.
• Oct. 25, 8 p.m.
• Oct. 26, 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
• Oct. 27, 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
