Statewide diaper drive planned in recognition of Diaper Need Awareness Week

Table of Contents

Several organizations are organizing a statewide diaper drive to help families in Virginia that are struggling to buy diapers. Diaper banks, maternal health hubs, and diaper pantries across the state are combining on the effort in recognition of Diaper Need Awareness Week Sept. 23-29.

A healthy change of diapers costs nearly $100 per month, or as much as six percent of a full-time minimum wage worker’s salary.

One in two Virginia mothers struggle to provide diapers for their babies, according to the Virginia Diaper Bank Network, and a lack of diapers can lead to health problems for infants and toddlers.

Diapers also cannot be bought with food stamps or WIC vouchers.

Community partners are helping to promote the effort by initiating diaper drives, volunteering as Diaper Change “Drop-Off Zones” where people can bring their donations, and in other ways. To become a community partner, or for details, contact Phyllis Bradley at pbradley@urbanbabybeginnings.org.
