Sportable recognizes 6 partners, prepares to host national wheelchair basketball tournament in Henrico

"Bringing the NWBA Wheelchair Basketball National Tournaments to Richmond is a result of the support of Sportable and our six Foundational partners [Dominion Energy, Henrico Sports and Entertainment Authority, Markel, Richmond Region Tourism, Sheltering Arms Institute, and TowneBank], and we are grateful for their commitment," said David Shaffer, National Wheelchair Basketball Association's chief executive officer. "With their exceptional professionalism, we are confident that this event will surpass all expectations. Combining the state-of-the-art facilities at the Henrico Sports & Events Center with the beauty and vibrancy of the Richmond area, we anticipate a national championship series that will leave a lasting impression on our athletes, their families, and the entire community."

The event is expected to attract more than 1,200 wheelchair basketball players and 100 teams from throughout the country. It also will feature vendors, meeting spaces, and a championship game.

"Their early commitment to these championships were critical, and their support is providing the opportunity for the best youth and adult wheelchair basketball players to compete on a national stage right here in Central Virginia. We look forward to executing a highly entertaining, world-class event that is sure to change perceptions about adaptive athletes and leave a legacy in our community."

The top 16 ranked wheelchair basketball teams in each division will qualify for the national adult tournament April 12-14, while the top 36 ranked teams from the Varsity level and the top 16 teams from the Prep level will compete for championships April 5-7 in the Junior Division.
