Adaptive sports club Sportable has established its sixth official competitive team, the Road Warriors.  A para cycling team, the Sportable Road Warriors will officially be introduced with a jersey presentation at the team’s Oct. 5 training session at 6 p.m. at The Diamond.

The team, led by head coach Lucille O’Neil, is composed of 10 para cyclists who train weekly together, focusing on biking skill and performance and utilizing the Training Peaks app for individual workouts and progression tracking.  The team’s goal is to compete locally and regionally in 2021.   While training and competing, the Road Warriors will wear custom Primal cycling jerseys, made possible by the support of local sponsors Pedal Power and Silverman Law Firm.

“During the five years I have worked with Sportable’s recreational cycling program, I could see a competitive spark in some of these amazing athletes,” said O’Neil.  “Some had already tried a few MABRA paracycling races, others were quick to sign up for RABA’s Heart of Virginia Ride, the Ride for the Brave, and other local events. Developing a race team was a natural progression.  I am thrilled with the hard work and progress these cyclists have already made, and know they are race ready, whenever races can resume.”

“We are thrilled to have the Road Warriors join our family of other competitive teams within Sportable,” said Hunter Leemon, Sportable executive director.  Other Sportable teams include the Crush Wheelchair Lacrosse Team, Hive Power Soccer Team, Possums Wheelchair Rugby Team, Rim Riders Adult Wheelchair Basketball Team, and Spokes Youth Wheelchair Basketball Team.
