Table of Contents

Southern States Cooperative is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2023 with several public events at its West Broad Street retail location, as well as employee celebration events at its headquarters in Brookfield Place.Among the events will be the opening of a time capsule that was installed when the headquarters opened in Henrico County in the late 1970s.

Founded in 1923 as Virginia Seed Service to supply seed to Virginia farmers suited for the state's growing conditions, the cooperative eventually expanded into feed, fertilizer, and crop protection, and became known as Southern States Cooperative in the 1930s.  Today, Southern States operates in eight states across the Southeast, with more than 100 retail locations, along with professional turf businesses in Alabama and Georgia.

The cooperative recently launched a “Share Your Story” campaign – collecting personal stories of members and employees and sharing their stories via social media throughout the year. Southern States leadership will also be holding local customer appreciation events throughout the year.
