Some Henrico County children ages 5 to 11 now are eligible for COVID-19 booster shots, following authorization in recent days from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Children in that age range who completed their primary series of the Pfizer vaccine at least five months ago now may receive a Pfizer booster. Appointments are available through pediatricians, pharmacies, and the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts.

RHHD officials are encouraging parents to check with their child’s pediatrician, call the RHHD hotline at (804) 205-3501 or check with a local pharmacy to schedule an appointment or learn about walk-in hours.

RHHD’s walk in vaccine clinics will begin offering boosters to children May 24 at the Whitcomb Resource Center (from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.) and May 25 at Mosby Resource Center (from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.)

Children also qualify to receive their boosters in their homes, through the RHHD’s Doses on Demand program, which can be scheduled by calling the hotline at (804) 205-3501.

“Staying up to date on vaccines remains the best tool we have at preventing serious infections from COVID-19,” said RHHD Public Health Nurse Supervisor Joanna Cirillo. “We’re eager to give boosters to the little ones to ensure they are as safe from COVID-19 as possible.”

Everyone 5 and older now is eligible to receive a booster shot five months after having completed their primary series, and adults 50 and older, people 12 and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised, and people who received two doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine also are eligible to receive a second booster.
