Solar United Neighbors this week announced the launch of the Richmond and Hampton Roads 2024 Solar Co-op, a program designed to make solar energy more accessible to residents and businesses in the region. This initiative marks the first time a co-op will bring Richmond and Hampton Roads together in a collective effort to harness solar power.

The co-op offers a free platform for homeowners and business owners to learn about solar energy and leverage their collective buying power to secure competitive pricing and high-quality solar panel installations. According to Brandon Praileau, Virginia Program Director for SUN, the co-op is part of a larger movement to create a cleaner, fairer, and more accessible electricity system.

"Together, we’re building a movement to transform our electricity system into one that is cleaner, fairer, and shares its benefits more broadly," said Praileau. "It’s never been a better time.”

The co-op will facilitate a competitive bidding process among solar companies, ultimately selecting a single installer to complete the projects. Members are not obligated to purchase panels but can opt to individually purchase based on the group rate secured by the installer.

This initiative is bolstered by a network of partners, including Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Drive Electric RVA, Norfolk Solar/SUN Spots, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, Virginia Clinicians for Climate Action, and Wesley Union A.M.E. Zion Church.

"Having gone solar as a church, we are excited to support the co-op as a way for others to share in the benefits of solar power and energy cost savings,” said Diane Arnold, treasurer of Wesley Union A.M.E. Zion Church.

To kick off the program, SUN will host a launch event in Henrico Dec. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Triple Crossing Beer - Fulton, 5203 Hatcher Street. To register for the event, click here.
