Solar co-op invites residents to go solar together

Solar United Neighbors, a nonprofit organization working to represent the needs and interests of solar owners and supporters, has launched a solar co-op in Metro Richmond.

The Metro Richmond 2023 Solar & EV Charger Co-op is free to join and open to homeowners and business owners from the city of Richmond and counties of Henrico, Chesterfield, and beyond. Partnering with the co-op are The City of Richmond, Henrico County Energy Management, Viridiant, and Norfolk Solar.

Together, co-op members will learn about solar energy and leverage their numbers to purchase individual solar systems at a competitive price and top quality. After a competitive bidding process facilitated by SUN, which remains vendor neutral, co-op members will select a single solar company to complete the installations.

Joining the co-op does not obligate members to purchase solar. Members will have the option to individually purchase panels and electric vehicle chargers based on the installer’s group rate.

“This is an excellent opportunity for our community to learn more about going solar at their home or businesses,” said Carrie Webster, Henrico County Energy Manager.

SUN has hosted 49 solar co-ops in Virginia since 2014, and will host several free information sessions to educate community members about solar energy and the co-op. Informational meetings will take place Sept. 26 (Virtual/Webinar; 6 p.m.), Oct. 18 (Richmond, 6 p.m.), and Nov. 15 (Richmond, 6 p.m.).
