Marcie Shea, who was one of three finalists last fall to fill the Tuckahoe District School Board seat on an interim basis, has announced that she will seek the seat in this November's general election.

Shea is a former physics teacher at Freeman High School and a PTA volunteer.

The seat is held by former Henrico principal Bill Pike, who was appointed Oct. 11 to serve the final 15 months of the term vacated by former member Lisa Marshall as she continued her fight against breast cancer. Shea and Melissa Dart were the other two finalists for the interim appointment, which was made by the other four School Board members.

During that process, both Shea and Dart expressed their intents to seek the seat in this year's election.

While at Freeman, Shea was recognized by Henrico County with a Henrico 21 teaching award for her efforts to cultivate critical thinking. She also was selected as Virginia’s representative in the 2010 Discovery Education STEM Institute.

She gave up her teaching career to focus on raising her family but has continued to be involved with education, offering instructional coaching, one-on-one tutoring with students, volunteering to teach STEM and filling emergency teaching vacancies in math and science.

At the district level, she served on the Henrico 21 Evaluation Committee and Strategic Planning Committee for high school instruction. She also serves as a representative on the Lay Advisory Committee.

In a release announcing her candidacy, Shea cited as goals her desires to:

• impose a class size cap;
• expand high-quality non-AP class offerings in high schools and technical centers;
• ensure that the 2020 comprehensive redistricting plans account for new growth in Henrico.
