A second employee of GRTC has died from complications caused by COVID-19, the transit system announced Monday.

The employee, whose identity GRTC did not release, died Jan. 9 after having tested positive Dec. 17. The employee last worked Dec. 10 in a non-public-facing job, according to GRTC spokesperson Carrie Rose Pace.

The employee was the 41st COVID case among 38 employees and was admitted to a local hospital Dec. 22.

“I am so deeply saddened by this loss to their family and to all of us at GRTC and so deeply weary in my soul of the ongoing toll this disease is taking on all of us and all of our families and friends," GRTC Chief Executive Officer Julie Timm said in a statement. "This is our second loss of a GRTC employee to complications from the COVID-19 virus. I pray this is our last.”

Free counseling is available to all GRTC employees and their families through GRTC’s Employee Assistance Program.

Public transit employees are expected to begin receiving the vaccine soon as part of Group 1B, and GRTC is coordinating with the health department on timing and logistics for vaccine deployment to its workforce.
