The Henrico School Board is considering the possibility of beginning a process to redraw its school boundaries.

Board members have discussed the potential need for such a process for months, since plans to double the size and capacity of Holladay Elementary School (instead of building a separate school) and rebuild Tucker and Highland Springs high school took shape last year. At their April 18 meeting, they heard from staff members about a potential timeline for a redistricting effort, which could seek to establish new boundaries in time for the 2021-22 school year.

A tentative proposed timeline would allow the board to award a contract to a consultant this month, then begin the redistricting process in earnest this summer with the collection of data and establishment of a committee of community members to lead the process and recommend a plan.

The school system would anticipate holding about 30 public meetings during the second half of the year, staff members said, and the School Board would select a plan in the spring. The board could look significantly different next year, following this November’s elections; two members (Bev Cocke of Brookland and Bill Pike of Tuckahoe) are leaving the board, and only one current member (Micky Ogburn) has publicly announced plans to seek re-election.

Details about the process will be provided by the school system at http://henricoschools.us/redistricting2021.
