School Board revises timeline to select Tuckahoe District member

Table of Contents

With the impending arrival of Hurricane Florence, the Henrico School Board has revised its timeline to select a new representative for the Tuckahoe magisterial district. The board had scheduled a Sept. 13 public hearing to receive input on the three finalists for the position but postponed it one week because of the storm.

The new timeline is:

• Thursday, Sept. 20 (4 p.m.): Public hearing to solicit input regarding the candidates.
• Thursday, Oct. 4  (5 p.m.): Special work session to select and appoint the Tuckahoe District representative.
• Friday, Oct. 5  (8:30 a.m.): New Board member takes oath of office at Henrico County Circuit Court.
• Thursday, Oct. 11: New Tuckahoe District School Board member attends first School Board meeting.

The finalists for the seat are:

• Melissa Dart, a member of the HCPS Special Education Advisory Committee.
• Bill Pike, former principal of Lakeside Elementary School and former assistant principal at Hermitage High School.
• Marcie Shea, a former teacher at Douglas Freeman High School and a current PTA volunteer.

Henrico citizens are invited to speak about the vacancy at the 4 p.m. hearing on Sept. 20. Members of the public will have four minutes each to address the board. Citizens may sign up in advance to speak at the public hearing by contacting Debbie Ward, clerk of the School Board, at 652-3808 or by e-mailing dnward@henrico.k12.va.us.

The appointed member will serve on the School Board representing the Tuckahoe District until a new member, elected in November 2019, assumes office in January 2020.

Dart and Shea have indicated that they plan to seek the seat in next November's general election.
