Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a chance for people to dispose of unused or expired medications – especially prescription opioids – before they can be misused, abused, or accidentally ingested.

Law enforcement agencies, community partners, and members of the Virginia Attorney General's team will be stationed at dozens of locations throughout the state to accept medications for proper disposal. Take-back locations throughout the Richmond region will be open Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including these in or near Henrico:

• Fairfield Library, 1401 North Laburnum Avenue;
• Henrico Division of Police Training Center, 7721 East Parham Road;
• University of Richmond Police Department, 490 Westhampton Way;
• Virginia State Police Area 1 and 8 Office, 9300 Brook Road;
• Wegman’s, 12200 Wegmans Boulevard.

“Drug takeback days are a quick, safe, easy way to dispose of unwanted or expired prescriptions that you may have lying around your house, making our homes, families and communities safer and healthier,” said Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring. “Sadly, all too often addiction starts at home in the medicine cabinet when unused prescriptions fall into the hands of someone who could abuse them. I want to encourage all Virginians to take an hour out of their weekend to clean out any old or unused prescriptions and bring them to a drug takeback location near you.”
