The Safe Space Market RVA is offering a weekly opportunity for people to support and promote the visibility of the region’s Black, queer, trans, indigenous, and other underrepresented makers, artists, and small business owners.

The market is held each Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lakeside Farmers’ Market, 6110 Lakeside Avenue.

The effort was created and organized by a group working to help the small businesses owned by marginalized groups and others, many of whom have struggled because of the pandemic.

The market is designed to be welcoming and safe for everyone, especially marginalized groups, and it requires strict mask and social distancing requirements. The number of people permitted inside the market at one time will be limited.

Each month, the market collective works to support a local organization involved in anti-racist work, support work for the LGBTQ+ community, or working toward Black/queer equity. This month, it is working with RVA Community Fridges, a local organization that provides free food in free fridges throughout the region for anyone in need.

The market features live music and a food truck each week.
