Families and staff members from two Henrico County public schools are mourning the loss of a school system employee today.

River Edge Elementary School physical education instructional assistant and former first-grade teacher Sheryl Vaughan, who previously taught at Twin Hickory Elementary School for 18 years, died this weekend following a four-year battle with cancer. Rivers Edge Principal Pamela James made the announcement in an email to the Rivers Edge community Monday.

“Mrs. Vaughan was a one-of-a-kind teacher who made every student, parent, and staff member feel special with her positivity, love, and laughter,” James wrote. “She had a passion for teaching and making a difference in the lives of her students.  Our community will continually be grateful for the kindness, love, and the many lessons she brought to our students.”

The two schools plan to partner to coordinate additional ways for the community to remember Vaughan, James wrote, and will share information as soon as it’s available.

Tributes to Vaughan on social media praised her as a teacher, mentor and friend.

“Sheryl made every student (and human!) feel so loved and so smart, no matter the challenges they faced,” a fellow teacher wrote. “Even my fifth grade students who had never met her until that year, felt like they had the biggest cheerleader on their side because of her. To this day, my goal is to be even partially as good of a teacher as her, because holy moly she really is that good.”

“Such a beautiful person Sheryl was and she will be forever remembered for her bright and bubbly personality that she shared with the world,” another friend wrote.
