The event is hosted by Sportable, an adaptive sports club, and is open to all levels of players. It will offer more than $5,000 in prize money.

During the past three years, the tournament has attracted more than 100 players from 26 states. This year, the event is being elevated to a United States Tennis Association Level 1 tournament, which means it will offer the highest level of competition at the national level. It's also part of the International Tennis Federation Futures Series, a series of tournaments that span 40 countries across the professional UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

The River City Slam is one of only six events in the USTA Wheelchair Junior Tournament Series, which provides opportunities for junior wheelchair tennis players to compete at the national level.

“As a national Level 1 and international Futures wheelchair tennis tournament, we are thrilled that the River City Slam will be bigger and better than ever,” said Hunter Leemon, Sportable's chief executive officer. “The new sanctioning is a testament to the success and growth of this event over the last three years. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host a high level of competition for some of the top wheelchair tennis players in the country – and in the world – right here in Virginia."
