Glen Allen native Chris Durkin will continue his professional soccer career with Sint-Truidense V.V. in the Belgian Pro League, the club announced on Thursday. It paid a fee of $1.1 million to D.C. United of Major League Soccer in the U.S. for the rights to Durkin, who had already spent most of the 2019-20 season playing with the club on loan from D.C. United.

Durkin became part of the D.C. United Academy, a training program for the United, at the age of 12, while still living with his family in Glen Allen. He later played for the Under-17 and Under-20 United States World Cup teams, captaining the latter last year.

“We want to thank Chris for starting his career at D.C. United, and we wish him all the best with his goals and dreams of a career in Europe,” said Dave Kasper, D.C. Unite’s general manager and vice president of soccer operations. "He will always be a part of the D.C. United family as he was when he started playing in our Academy and drove I-95 daily for two hours each way to get to practice.”

Durkin originally signed with D.C. United in 2016 and made his MLS debut for the team in March 2018. He played in 38 MLS games altogether before joining the Belgian team last summer.

There, he played in 14 games.
