Registration is now open for the the Richmond Youth Peace Summit, scheduled for Saturday, March 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Richmond Waldorf School, 1301 Robin Hood Road in Richmond.

The summit is organized by the Richmond Peace Education Center as a part of the Richmond Youth Peace Project program for teenagers, in collaboration with Drums No Guns. The event is free of charge open to all Central Virginia youngsters between the ages of 12 and 19. Lunch is provided. Participants can earn six hours of community service credit by attending. Teens can register online at http://www.rpec.org/summit2019.

Dr. Tawnya Pettiford-Wates or "Dr. T" of TheaterVCU and affiliate of The Conciliation Project will open the summit by engaging youth in social justice theater activities to examine racism, in conjunction with 2019 being the 400th year since the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to Virginia.

Following the opening session, participants will be able to select from a variety of workshops that will help provide youth with tools to respond to and overcome racism. Eleven 90-minute workshops will be offered for both the morning and afternoon. When youngsters register, they will pick the workshops that are of most interest to them. Early registrants will get the primary selection of workshops.

Workshops will include skill building, such as conflict resolution, advocacy and activism and job interview skills. Other workshops offer self-care, mindfulness, positive relationship-building, eating well and self-expression through art and culture, including visual arts, spoken word poetry, and dance.

The summit also will include a midday performance by local musicians, dancers and poets.

Registration is required for all attendees, and groups are welcome. For details, e-mail rachael@rpec.org.
