Report of active shooter at Henrico High School deemed unfounded

Reports that an active shooter was on the campus of Henrico High School Thursday morning were unfounded, according to Henrico Police.

At 11:01 a.m., the police’s Twitter account sent an automated Tweet indicating that police were responding to a report of an active shooter near the 300 block of Azalea Avenue. (The school is located at 302 Azalea Avenue.)

About 30 minutes later, a follow-up Tweet and message to the media from Henrico Police Lt. Shawn Kopelove indicated that the report was unfounded.

Later, Kopelove reported that officials were investigating the source of the original call that suggested a shooting was occurring and said that school resource officers would remain at surrounding schools.

He told the Citizen that no additional information about the original call was yet available.

The police division’s Twitter account routinely sends automated Tweets anytime a potential shooting has been reported, and police follow with subsequent Tweets to explain whether a shooting actually has occurred or not.
