Report: Health care costs skyrocketing for Virginians

The average cost of health insurance for a Virginian with employer-sponsored coverage in 2022 was $7,400, and the average family health insurance premium was $21,400 – a 76.6% increase in average single coverage costs and a 79.3% increase in family coverage costs since 2008.

The report also found that total health spending in Virginia, as a percentage of gross domestic product, declined slightly in 2021 and 2022 after spending a decade on the rise. In 2022, total health spending was $14.7% of GDP, the lowest level since 2011.

Virginia's health care sector remains a significant employer, accounting for 389,000 jobs in the fourth quarter of 2022. The unemployment rate in the health care industry was also low in 2022, at 2.7% and even lower (2.1%) among those with health care-specific occupations.
