Recreational water advisory lifted for James River in Eastern Henrico, Richmond

Table of Contents

The James River is now safe for recreational swimming, according to the VDH, but the department still recommends that people take precautions when swimming in the river.

Some of those include showering after swimming, washing hands frequently, and avoiding going in the water if you are vomiting or have diarrhea.

If you are taking fish caught from the river, the VDH recommends removing the skin from filets and disposing of the viscera and internal organs. The fish also should be cooked to a proper temperature, and knives and cutting boards should be cleaned with soapy water.

The VDH also is reminding people never to swallow untreated water and to avoid swimming if their skin has cuts or open wounds. Children under 5, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of contracting an illness from the river.
