Beginning May 7, anyone 18 or older traveling on a domestic flight or attempting to enter a secure federal facility or military base in the United States will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another federally approved form of identification, such as a passport.

In Virginia, REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses include a gold star.

REAL ID is a coordinated effort from the federal government designed to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver's licenses and ID cards while inhibiting the ability of terrorists to evade detection through the use of fraudulent identification.
