A statement Tuesday afternoon from Henrico Police about the crash and officer shooting that left a man dead Saturday night on I-64 in Eastern Henrico did not clarify what happened during the encounter between the officer and two occupants of the car, which police said this weekend had prompted the shooting.

The victim was the driver of the vehicle, 53-year-old Tony E. Singleton of Norfolk, who was shot by a responding officer. Officers had responded after the vehicle crashed and overturned several times. Singleton’s cause of death hasn’t yet been determined.

Police and Henrico Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor are reviewing body cam footage, and the officer who shot Singleton has been placed on standard administrative assignment, pending an investigation.

Henrico Police Chief Eric English said the situation is difficult for all involved.

"Our team is working hard to determine the facts of what happened that evening," he said in a statement.
