Arcadia Publishing, a company that produces a photographic “Images of America” series, is looking to continue the series in Glen Allen.
The company is seeking at least 150 historic photos of Glen Allen, including community gatherings, landmarks, stores and events.
The goal of the series is to be able to tell the story of a community through vintage photos – and the older the picture, the better.
Cary Holladay, who lived in Glen Allen as a child and later became the director of the creative writing program at the University of Memphis, will facilitate the gathering of photos.
“I’m hoping there are some longtime residents who are willing to open their photo albums and share their collections,” Holladay said.
Having lived in Glen Allen until the fifth grade, Holladay still cherishes the special character the community has kept throughout the years.
“The people are just the kindest hearted people, and it's always had that country atmosphere despite its close proximity to Richmond,” Holladay said.
Those interested in submitting photos should contact Holladay via email at holladaycary@gmail.com for details about how to do so.
Images submitted cannot be digital photos – they must be original photos or scanned copies of an original. Those who submit photos also should be able to provide details about them, including when and where they were taken and who and what they depict.
Eventually, once it's safe to do so, Holladay wants to set up in Glen Allen for a day and collect the vintage photos in person. Until then, she’s excited for the opportunity to connect with the people of Glen Allen.
“I want the book to be inclusive, fun to read and accurately tell the story of this special and wonderful community,” Holladay said.
