Richmond International Airport security officers April 25 cited a Powhatan man who was caught carrying a loaded handgun in his carry-on bag at the airport.

The 9mm gun was loaded with 13 bullets, according to TSA officials, whose officers detected the gun through an X-ray at the security checkpoint.

The man was cited on a weapons charge and also faces a civil penalty of up to $15,000.

“It is disappointing to see so many travelers bringing their firearms to our checkpoints,” said Robin “Chuck” Burke TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport. “Last year our officers detected 17 firearms at our checkpoints during all 12 months of the year. Today we are not even through four months of 2024 and already we have intercepted 11 firearms."

Guns may only be carried in checked bags. More information about how to travel with a gun can be found on the TSA website, and passengers should contact their airlines to see if they have any additional requirements for traveling with a firearm.
