Power to the Panties

A 2019 graduate of Randolph-Macon College who holds an annual fundraiser during Sexual Assault Awareness Month is looking to double her proceeds this year and donate them to St. Mary's Hospital.

Katelyn Jordan of Richmond was sexually assaulted during her freshman year at RMC, and went to St. Mary's for treatment.

Jordan noted that following an assault, victims will sometimes seek the services of a forensic nurse for a PERK examination. These exams often result in the victim having to give the nurse their underwear as evidence, and the hospital in turn gives victims a new pair of underwear.

Jordan is hoping to replenish the supply of underwear for men, women, and children at St. Mary’s Hospital, whose medical teams she calls "very special to me.”

"With this panty drive I hope to give back to the hospital that I myself went to, and further advocate for victims.”

For the last two years, Jordan has facilitated panty drives benefiting St. Mary's and Hanover Safe Place, which netted approximately 500 pairs of panties each year. This year, she hopes to double that amount, and is asking for donations of new underwear or cash through Venmo, or mailed to P.O. Box 4248, Richmond, VA  23220.
