Henrico County may soon have a new state historic marker, but it won't commemorate a historic building, colonial-era event, or Civil War battle.

With any luck, the county's next marker will highlight a cave – a beer cave, to be exact.

In February, the Richmond Beeristoric group filed an application for a marker with Virginia Department of Historic Resources. If approved, the marker would be located on Route 5 at Rocketts Landing, and indicate the location of what was the James River Steam Brewery from 1866 to 1879.

While the brewery closed during an economic downturn, and fire later destroyed the main building, the underground beer storage cave survives today. David G. Yuengling, Jr., oldest son of the founder of today's Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pa., was part owner of the James River Steam Brewery. A decision regarding approval of the marker is expected by June.

In May, the Beeristoric group – which organized a bus tour last November (pictured) – will host its first walking tour of historic tavern sites in downtown Richmond. Proceeds from the May 18 event will support the nonprofit's mission of supporting the community and promoting local beer history.
