A student at J. R. Tucker High School is in police custody after allegedly bringing a loaded handgun to school on Friday morning.

School administrators found the student and removed him from class, then the student attempted to flee from a Henrico Police School Resource Officer, according to police.

The teenage boy was ultimately taken into custody without incident, police said. He is being held at the Henrico Juvenile Detention Home on charges of possession of a firearm on school grounds, concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a juvenile and possession of marijuana at school.

School administrators are not aware of any threats against the school, and the school did not go into lockdown on Friday, according to an email from Principal Art Raymond sent to families on Friday.

“Please use this as an opportunity to speak with your students about the role we all have in keeping our school safe. If they see or hear about a potential danger to our school, they should report it right away to police or an adult in our building,” Raymond said in the email. “The individual who alerted staff today is to be applauded for their action. Working together we can ensure that J.R. Tucker remains a safe place for students to learn and grow.”

According to the Henrico County Public Schools’ code of conduct, bringing a weapon to school can result in a range of discipline up to and including a recommendation for expulsion.
