Plate and Goblet: Coaches Cook-Off event planned Sept. 15

Table of Contents

The Coaches Cook-Off, a charity fundraising event featuring local college coaches and chefs, has returned.

This Friday, Sept. 15, the basketball coaches from the VCU and UR men's team and the women’s teams at VSU and VUU will compete for the championship title of “Top Chef” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Main Line Brewery in Richmond.

Proceeds benefit the workforce development program of Commonwealth Autism. Food will be provided by chefs from EAT Restaurant Partners, Toast, Brenner Pass, and Richmond Restaurant Group, and by other local establishments.

Yours truly will serve on the panel of judges (as will Eileen Mellon, a former Citizen intern now with Richmond Magazine).

The owners of Lindsey Food Group, who are residents of the Innsbrook area, have a new restaurant in the works for Henrico.

While many of Mike Lindsey's and Kimberly Love-Lindsey's best-known restaurants (Lillie Pearl, Jubilee, ML Steak) are in the city, Farm + Oak will be located right in their backyard – in the space at 3601 Cox Road formerly occupied by Natalie's Taste of Lebanon.

As the Lindseys told the Richmond Times-Dispatch, they wanted to open Farm + Oak because they had noticed a scarcity of full-service restaurants in their neighborhood. They believe the new restaurant -- which they hope to open by November -- will attract lunchtime office workers as well as happy hour and dinner crowds.

Farm + Oak will be the tenth restaurant for the Lindsey Food Group, which has also acquired Frostings Bake Shop on Pouncey Tract Road in Short Pump. Once the bakery reopens -- possibly by the end of this month -- the Lindseys hope to be able to bake desserts for all their restaurants in-house.

Short Pump also is the home of the Lindseys' Buttermilk and Honey (12246 W. Broad St.), which has an additional site in downtown Richmond.

Several Henrico restaurants made the Top Ten list of a recent RIC Today reader poll of best BBQ joints, among them Deep Run Roadhouse, Redemption BBQ, and Ronnie's BBQ. McCormack's Big Whisky Grill on Robinson Street was also mentioned in the poll -- and you can enjoy their BBQ at the Regency Square location just as you can in the city.

Short Pump will soon boast a Popeyes, according to Richmond BizSense. The chain's new restaurant will be located near Regal Cinemas and Barnes & Noble.
