Planet Aid, an environmental nonprofit focused on textile reuse, will celebrate the grand opening of its 50th donation center Saturday, Dec. 7 at The Shops at White Oak Village, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The shopping center is located at 4501 South Laburnum Avenue.

The new donation center aims to provide a convenient and secure way for the community to donate used clothing and shoes. The center is built from a refurbished steel shipping container, making it weather-resistant and tamper-proof. It also is equipped with solar-powered lighting and 24-hour video monitoring for added safety and security. The center will be serviced by Planet Aid’s team regularly, according to the organization.

Only about 15% of textiles currently are recycled in the US, according to Planet Aid, which uses proceeds from donated goods to support its local and international programs focused on education, health, and environmental sustainability.

Since its founding in 1997, Planet Aid has collected more than 2 billion pounds of shoes and clothes, raising more than $100 million to support community development projects.
