The Original Ronnie’s BBQ restaurant recently won the top award at the Six in the City Southern BBQ Experience in Chicago, a competition featuring pitmasters and chefs from states known for their barbeque.

The Varina restaurant received the ‘Best Chef’ award at the annual event, which also featured smoked meats from Birmingham, Alabama; Columbia, South Carolina; Louisville, Kentucky; Memphis, Tennessee; and Raleigh, North Carolina.

The award was determined by a vote of approximately 150 meeting planners. The Ronnie’s BBQ team served attendees brown sugar bacon, sriracha deviled eggs, Virginia smoked brisket, macaroni and cheese, honey butter cornbread, and sweat tea lemonade pound cake.

Richmond Region Tourism partnered with Ronnie’s BBQ for the event; teams from the region have won the event's "Best Booth Presentation" twice but had never won the "Best Chef" award before. The Six in the City event focuses on mid-sized destinations.

“This was an exciting ‘win’ for our region,” said Jerrine Lee, vice president of sales at Richmond Region Tourism. “Groups choose our community because of our high-quality facilities and because they can easily experience our great attractions, culture and dining. The meetings and events industry is all about building relationships, and what better way to connect than through delicious southern food. Ronnie’s helped give attendees a taste of our incredible food scene.”

Ronnie’s BBQ is located beside the Virginia Capital Trail at 2097 New Market Road and is open Friday to Sunday from noon to 7 p.m., or until sold out.
