Operations of Walkerton Tavern transferred to Cultural Arts Center

The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen is now operating Henrico's Walkerton Tavern, located on adjacent property. The move took effect Aug. 14 with a vote by the Henrico Board of Supervisors and will allow CACGA to provide additional cultural and artistic events, according to center officials.

Walkerton Tavern, constructed in 1825 for John Walker, served travelers along the Mountain Road corridor. From 1857 to 1941, Walkerton was the home of the Hopkins family. The Bowles family purchased the home in 1941 and sold it to S. Douglas Fleet in 1986. Fleet sold the property to Henrico County, which opened it to the public in 2005. It is now a National Register Historic Site.

The building, gazebo, and garden area are available for private rentals.

"Walkerton Tavern and its beautiful garden area are a completely different kind of venue from the other event spaces that we have at The Center," said Events Manager Nancy Allen. "I love having a variety of choices to offer as people are planning life's most important celebrations and events."

CACGA also plans to use the addition of Walkerton Tavern to expand its arts programming; early plans include the use of Walkerton Tavern’s facilities for special community events throughout the year – including a number that are family-friendly and free.

“We are very honored to be taking over stewardship of Walkerton Tavern,” said Arts Center President K Alferio. “The building has a rich history that we intend to honor while instilling new life and expanding the use of the beautiful building and grounds.  From outdoor concerts and events to art classes and private functions, Walkerton will serve Henrico and the region’s need for a unique cultural venue.”
