Only 34 people filed initial unemployment claims in Henrico during the most recent week (Dec. 26-Jan. 1), according to the Virginia Employment Commission. As of the same ending date, there were only 457 people filing continuing claims, the agency reported.

Statewide, just more than 1,800 people filed first-time claims during the most recent week – an increase of 609 from the previous week. More than half of those new claims that included self-reported industries were in the construction, manufacturing, accommodation and food services, and administrative and waste services industries.

Eligibility for benefits is determined on a weekly basis, according to the VEC, so not all weekly claims filed result in a benefit payment. That’s because the initial claims numbers represent claim applications; claims are then reviewed for eligibility and legitimacy.
