On Super Tuesday, Henrico voters more lukewarm than statewide counterparts in support of Trump

Table of Contents

In a Super Tuesday devoid of much suspense, Henrico voters generally mirrored their counterparts statewide in their support for President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee but were less enthusiastic than Virginia voters overall in their support for presumptive Republican nominee and former president Donald Trump.

Trump earned about 54% of the vote among 27,920 cast in the county in the Republican primary, outdistancing Nikki Haley, who earned about 44%. Statewide, Trump received about 63% of the Republican vote. He already was well on his way to claiming the party’s nomination before Tuesday, but after he won primaries in 14 of 15 states, Haley officially suspended her campaign Wednesday. That ended any remaining suspense at the polls, but Trump still faces 91 felony counts in two states and two federal districts that could potentially land him in jail prior to this November’s general election.

Biden, facing no significant internal opposition as he seeks a second term, earned 89% of the vote in Henrico and also statewide, easily outdistancing candidates Marianne Williamson, a self-help author, and Dean Phillips, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota who officially ended his longshot campaign Wednesday.

Registered voters in Virginia were able to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primaries but not both. About 11.5% of Henrico's registered voters cast ballots in the Republican primary, while about 8% did so in the Democratic primary.

A total of 19,600 votes were cast in the Democratic primary in Henrico. Biden's most lopsided support in Henrico came from the Canterbury precinct, at which more than 98% of voters (143 in total) cast ballots for him and just 2 voters cast ballots for Williamson. The Lakeside precinct delivered the most lukewarm support of Biden, with about 69% of ballots there cast for him but 26% cast for Williamson.

Trump won 13 of 15 precincts in the Brookland District, 15 of the 22 in the Fairfield District (in which he also tied in two precincts with Haley), seven of the 15 in the Three Chopt District, six of the 19 in the Tuckahoe District and 17 of the 18 in the Varina District. His strongest support came in the Antioch precinct in Varina, where he won 83% of the vote. He won just 29% of the vote at the Fairfield precinct, but only 11 total votes were cast in the Republican primary there.
