Henrico County officials broke ground today for new versions of J.R. Tucker and Highland Springs high schools. Both new facilities are expected to open in time for the 2021-22 school year.

“What we are doing here is transformational,” County Manager John A. Vithoulkas said during the groundbreaking ceremony at Tucker Friday morning. “It is for the kids. It is for the community, and it really feels good.”

Tucker’s existing building opened in 1962 and was slated to undergo a $50-million major renovation until that plan was replaced with one allowing for a completely new school. Officials announced plans for the new Tucker and Highland Springs last fall, using funds from the bond referendum approved by voters in 2016 and from several other sources.

County officials originally announced that the two projects would cost a total of $160 million ($80 apiece), but instead they'll cost $191 million.
