Obituary - Yakov Fillipovich Gurshpun

GURSHPUN, Yakov Fillipovich, age 78, of Henrico, Virginia, passed away after a long battle with pancreatic cancer on November 9, 2024. He was preceded by his parents, Phillip (Fishel) Gurshpun and Sofia Tkach, and older half-sisters Etya Grinberg, Nonna Zadanovsky. He is survived by an older half-sister, Mila Chertkova, a loving wife of 55 years, Polina Aleksandrovna Gurshpun; an older daughter, Aleksandra (Rostislav Khaskin); a younger son Vladimir Gurshpun (Marina Gurshpun), and his grandchildren David, Phillip, Elizabeth and Katalina.
Yakov was born in Vinnitsya, Ukraine to parents that survived Nazi concentration camp Pechora during WWII and lost most their family members due to starvation. Yakov married Polina in 1969. In 1970 he and his family moved to Kherson, Ukraine. Yakov worked at the shipyard as an electrician until 1995 when he immigrated to the United States with his family. He retired from the Virginia State Police, where he worked as an electronic equipment technician for 16 years. Yakov was an avid fisherman and gardener. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them how to do things around the house.
