Susan Wagener Higgins passed away peacefully on February 25, 2023. She is survived by her three children, Peyton Miller, Patricia Clarke and Harrison Higgins; her brother, James Wagener; and nine grandchildren. Susan was predeceased by her youngest child, Philip Higgins, in 2002.

A lifelong resident of Richmond, Virginia, Susan was born to Hunter and Patricia Wagener on September 26, 1949. She attended Douglas Freeman High School and graduated from the University of Richmond in 1971.

After marrying Harrison Higgins in 1973, Susan poured herself into raising four children. Her creativity and imagination were only surpassed by her love and faith in Jesus. Susan approached life from an artist’s perspective. With inventiveness and care she met the challenges of early motherhood while fostering in her children an ability to find humor and hope in any predicament.

Susan was a missionary at heart. She attended Third Presbyterian and Hope Church and instilled in those close to her the importance of prayer. She volunteered at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, worked as a librarian at the University of Richmond and served as a substitute teacher in Henrico County.

A service to celebrate Susan's life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 2, at The Lodge at Hope Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to CHAT, Church Hill Activities and Tutoring, or to Young Life Richmond West End.
